China issues new Regulation on Network Data Security: Key takeaways for businesses

In a significant move to strengthen its data regulation framework, the State Council of the People’s Republic of China announced on 30 September 2024 the issuance of the Regulation on Network Data Security Management (网络数据安全管理条例) (“Regulation”), set to take effect on 1 January 2025. The Regulation serves as a crucial implementation guideline for China’s existing cybersecurity and data protection laws, including the Cybersecurity Law, Data Security Law, and Personal Information Protection Law.
