Singapore and the Netherlands conclude MOU on collaboration in international climate science
30 July 2024
On 18 June 2024, the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment (“MSE”) announced that Singapore and the Netherlands had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (“MOU”) to collaborate on supporting international climate science research.
The MOU is part of both countries’ continuing support for the Technical Support Unit (“TSU”) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (“IPCC”) Working Group II on Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability. The IPCC is a United Nations body and it assesses the scientific basis of climate change, its impacts and future risks, and options for mitigation and adaptation. IPCC assessments provide a scientific basis for governments to develop climate-related policies and contribute to global climate action under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
Both Singapore and the Netherlands have a TSU office in their countries. The governments have secured premises and provided funds for staff and research for the TSU office in their jurisdictions as part of their ongoing support. The TSUs will provide scientific, technical, operational, and communications support to IPCC’s Working Group II in its seventh assessment report cycle which formally began in July 2023.
