We are pleased to share with you the inaugural issue of Decoder prepared by the Allen & Gledhill Technology & Corporate Intellectual Property Practice.

In Issue 1 of Decoder (November 2024), we evaluate developments at the intersection of law, technology, and current business trends, and share cautionary tales from our experiences. In this inaugural issue, we take a deep dive into the world of Large Language Models (LLMs), offering a plain English guide for knowledge workers to better understand the intricacies, advantages, drawbacks, and potential applications of these powerful AI tools.

In an update (March 2025), Issue 1.1 provides an addendum to Issue 1, focusing on recent advancements in models like DeepSeek-V3 and DeepSeek-R1, which have garnered significant attention in recent months. Notably, DeepSeek has open sourced their flagship models, including their frontier reasoning model, promoting accessibility and collaboration within the AI community. These models also introduce significant efficiency improvements, reducing hardware requirements and operational costs. With an eye towards the future, we also touch on Deep Research and our continuing experiences with using a distilled version of the DeepSeek reasoning model in our on-premise LLM.
