Allen & Gledhill donates S$1 million to support legal education in Singapore
As part of our 120th anniversary celebrations, our Firm has pledged to donate a total of $1 million to the Faculty of Law at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Yong Pung How School of Law of the Singapore Management University (SMU). This donation follows our tradition of supporting legal education in Singapore, and further highlights our commitment to nurturing the next generation of legal minds.
Each law school will be receiving $500,000 over the course of five years starting from 2023, that will go towards scholarships for promising legal students, as well as academic support programmes such as book prizes and mooting competitions. This also includes collaborating with the respective law schools to develop courses on novel areas of the law and supporting student programmes based on initiatives that NUS and SMU will be proposing.
In thanking us for our commitment to the legal education of young lawyers, Professor Simon Chesterman, Dean of the Faculty of Law of the National University of Singapore said: “Allen & Gledhill’s rich history is testimony to its willingness to take a long view in terms of the development of the firm and of Singapore’s legal ecosystem. We are deeply grateful that this important anniversary is being used to reaffirm the firm’s commitment to legal education and future generations of lawyers. This gift will make our efforts to recruit diverse and talented students far easier, as well as ensuring that our graduates are able to see that the profession supports and nurtures its own.”
Professor Lee Pey Woan, Dean of the Yong Pung How School of Law of the Singapore Management University echoed Professor Chesterman by saying: “Allen & Gledhill has always been a steadfast and wonderful partner in developing talents for the legal profession. The SMU Yong Pung How School of Law is extremely grateful for the firm’s generous gift. We will work closely with the firm to ensure that the gift is fully invested in supporting students and advancing legal research and education.”
In addition to our donation to NUS and SMU, our Firm has also unveiled a number of initiatives this year, aimed at giving back to society and advancing our national agenda on sustainable development. These initiatives include the launch of our A&G Sustainability Roadmap earlier this year in March, which was headlined by a tree planting ceremony attended by Minister for Culture, Community and Youth and Second Minister for Law, Mr Edwin Tong. In it, our Firm committed to reducing our Carbon Footprint by 50% by the year 2030. To further highlight our commitment to this goal, we also launched the A&G Electric Vehicle, which symbolises our commitment to reduce transport related emissions, and organised a series of activities such as a beach clean-up event at East Coast Park and a week-long e-waste recycling campaign in June.
Our “A&G in the Community” initiative was also launched this year, to further highlight our commitment to giving back to the community that we live and do business in. Under this initiative, all lawyers are strongly encouraged to spend at least 24 hours serving our community through volunteer work, or through being involved in pro bono work. In doing so, we hope to make an impact directly at the grassroot and community levels to people and organisations that need help.
