As a leading law firm, we at Allen & Gledhill recognise that we have the resources and the talent to create a positive impact on the society and community which we live in, work in, and are accountable to.
We are committed to doing business responsibly. Towards that end, we were the first law firm in South-east Asia to be admitted as a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact in 2021, and we strive to uphold the Ten Principles of the global compact.
It is important that everyone in our Firm participates in our Sustainability & ESG efforts, guided by a strategy and roadmap developed through external consultants and supported by our leaders at Allen & Gledhill. We have identified six material topics, namely, Human Capital & Wellbeing, Enabling Clients’ Sustainability, Community Engagement & Pro Bono, Thought Leadership & Innovation, Ethics & Anti-Corruption and Climate Change, and we recognise that they are central to our growth as a responsible and progressive organisation.
To symbolise our commitment to Sustainability & ESG, our Firm held a tree planting ceremony on 11 March 2022, which was attended by Minister for Culture, Community and Youth and Second Minister for Law, Mr Edwin Tong, SC alongside government and grassroots representatives as well as Partners from our Firm. The ceremony saw 50 trees planted, including several critically endangered species of trees that were native to Singapore, as part of the “Plant-A-Tree Programme”, helmed by the National Parks Board (NParks) through Garden City Fund, NParks’ registered charity and IPC. Later this year, our Firm will be planting another 70 trees, amounting to a total of 120 trees planted as part of our 120th anniversary celebrations this year.
Building on our admission as the first Singapore and ASEAN law firm to become a signatory of the United Nations Global Compact, our A&G Sustainability Day also saw the launch of our ESG Roadmap. This Roadmap was developed after a seven-month long Sustainability & ESG audit in 2021 with an independent consultancy.
Through this Roadmap, we plan to embark on initiatives to meet targets aimed at reducing our carbon emissions, contribute to the well-being of our society and communities, and improve on our corporate governance processes. The event also saw the unveiling of our corporate Electric Vehicle, which further highlights our commitment to reduce transport emissions and dependence on fossil fuels.
Rahmat Lim & Partners (our associate firm in Malaysia) recognises that plastic pollution is a global issue and they believe that technological innovations are able to significantly curb this issue and protect our oceans from being polluted further. In line with their commitment, Rahmat Lim & Partners is proud to support The Ocean Cleanup on its efforts in Malaysia. The Ocean Cleanup is a non-profit organisation developing advanced technologies to rid the world’s oceans of plastic. Their revolutionary product: the InterceptorTM will extract up to 50,000kgs of trash from the rivers per day, and prevent trash from adding to the build-up in the oceans.
