Myanmar implements additional allowance for workers
On 9 August 2024, the Myanmar National Committee for Setting Minimum Wages issued Notification No. 1/2024 (“Notification”), announcing a new allowance for workers (“new allowance”). The new allowance came into effect from 1 August 2024.
The new allowance supplements the existing minimum wage rate of MMK600 per hour, amounting to MMK4,800 for an eight-hour workday throughout the country, regardless of location and type of business, which has been in effect since May 2018.
A daily allowance of MMK1,000 was introduced in October 2023. The new allowance brings the total daily wage for an eight-hour workday to MMK6,800.
The Notification specifies that the new allowance does not apply to small businesses and family-owned businesses with less than 10 workers.
