Myanmar confirms income tax on MMK salaries can be paid in local currency regardless of contract terms
23 January 2025
On 24 December 2024, the Myanmar Medium Taxpayers Office 2 (“MTO”) issued a notice informing taxpayers that they may pay their personal income tax in Myanmar Kyats (“MMK”) if they receive their salaries in MMK despite their employment contracts specifying payment in foreign currency.
The MTO notice aligns with section 30 of the Union Taxation Law, which came into effect on 1 April 2024, requiring the payment of income taxes in the type of currency earned or received.
While this notice relates specifically to MTO, it is likely that other taxpayer offices will implement similar rulings.
