Patents accepted by Myanmar Intellectual Property Department from 31 October 2024

On 31 October 2024, Myanmar’s Intellectual Property Department (“IPD”) issued Announcement No. 14/2024 which provided that, effective immediately, the IPD would officially begin accepting applications for patent and utility model registration under the Patent Law. The Patent Law came into effect on 31 May 2024. Please read our article “Myanmar Patent Law in effect from 31 May 2024” for more information.

Applicants can now file to register new patents and utility models with the IPD electronically, in person, or by post. To be patented, an invention must not have been disclosed to the public anywhere by any means before the filing date or priority date (if claimed), involve an inventive step, and be capable of use in any industry. The requirements for a utility model registration are the same but with an inventive step not being necessary.
