Foreign companies in Myanmar allowed to locally source and export certain domestic commodities
On 17 December 2024, the Myanmar Ministry of Commerce issued Notification No. 93/2024 (“Notification”) providing that foreign companies are able to export, manufacture, or trade certain domestic commodities for the first time. The Notification states its objectives as being to improve productivity, gain access to more foreign markets, and obtain higher selling prices for products by exporting more high-quality domestic products to foreign markets.
The commodities listed in the Notification are as follows:
- Processed meat, fish and seafood products
- Processed agricultural products (such as rice, peas, and corn)
- Various types of pulp and paper
- Seeds (e.g. pulses)
- Refined minerals
- Semi-finished or finished products made from fruits and horticultural raw materials
- Furniture made from wood
- Environmentally friendly products that support
An export licence from the Department of Trade must be obtained prior to exporting the above commodities. In addition, the Notification sets out further approvals and procedures that must be complied with in regard to some of these classes of goods.
